hello, just wandering if any body can give me advice i have been working for a high street store for four months at my interview i was asked if i wanted full or part time hours i said full but they said they only had part time at the moment but full time may be available after my 90 day probation period during my 90 day probation period a full time member of staff left the store i asked for his hours and was told no because they are going to replace him with 2 more partime staff, fine i thought fair enough. they employed another person on 25 hours 5 more than me now she as been working for us for 6 weeks and yesteday my manager approached me and said by the way before you here this from anybody else the other member of staff is going full time from monday and we have got a new person starting monday on 25 hours i asked why i have not been offered the full time and he said it is nothing personel and its nothing to do with him its the area managers decision what i want to know is their a case for discrimination here. i feel so let down and hurt can any body help.

I cannot identify any grounds for discrimination as such, but I would be inclined to formally ask why I had not been selected for the full time position. You could do this in writing, and if you did not a satisfactory response, then you could instigate a grievance.
Let us know how you get on xGone ... or have I?0 -
I agree with dmg that I cannot see grounds for discrimination. If you don't have any idea why you have been 'passed over', I would ask for a meeting with your manager - tell him that you are still very keen on a full time job, and ask him if there is anything you can do which would help you to be assessed as suitable for a full time post. Say that you are willing and able to attend training, but you would like regular feedback about your work and whether there are any areas where you can develop or improve to be maximum use to the company. Even if you don't get extra hours, an attitude like this will help you to get a great reference for another job!!

I would certainly feel aggrieved had this happened to myself. Ask for an explanation and to access the company recruitment and selection policy, at the very least you should receive an explanation.I'd also be looking to have a read at any other relevant policies such as equality and diversity, equal opportunities etc etc.
In terms of discrimination, more info would be required. Do you feel there has been a race, gender, age, disability etc issue which may be questioned?Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -

Maybe he is a bit absent minded or disorganised and just remembered who asked last?
I undertsand you being upset, I would be! The only reason I can think of that they might have discriminated is if you have young children or something and the others don't? However, this would be pretty much impossible to prove and you might be best of getting a bit more experience in this place and then moving on to somewhere with fulltime hours available.0 -

Have you asked in writing? Put in a formal request for increase in hours, and to be considered for any full time posts......
If you have already asked in writing, then yes, you may have a case for discrimination and I would ask to see the HR department to discuss this.Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0 -
