Good areas of Sheffield?

Hi all,

A family member is moving to Sheffield and will be looking to buy a property, however probably renting first as they need to move for August.

Can anyone recommend any good areas to live, as we know nothing about Sheffield? They will be working at the Royal Hallamshire hospital, so want to live somewhere convenient for, but not necessarily right next to, there.

Budget probably £200k max for buying, which some quick research shows me will get a lot of places but maybe not the absolute best.
Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard

The tram service is brilliant in sheffield, royal hallamshire is a short walk from it, so any houses within a 5-10 min walk to that might be considered?
We had a budget of 55k and managed a 2 bed semi in Arborthorne.
So your 200k can go really far if you consider slightly out of the way but accessible by tram.

The hospital is slightly to the west of the city centre, so Ranmoor or Eccleshall would be a good bet. If you want to be further out Totley and Dore are very nice.

Best areas = Dore, Totley, Fulwood, Crookes.

Basically the entire western side of sheffield is viewed as the nicer area, and is within 15mins of some beautiful areas of the peak district.

It's pretty simple to get to the Hallamshire on foot. Driving is a pain, and parking is even worse. Fortunately the tram service is very efficient, and buses run regularly across sheffield.

The other option is biking. There is a big biking culture here so they wouldn't be alone.

You will have so much choice for that budget in Sheffield. Crookes and Walkley are both very good areas - Crookes has very good bus connections to the Royal Hallamshire and it is actually walkable from either. You could get a three or four bedroom house for well within that budget. You can walk into town from there too.

Broomhill will probably be too expensive unless you are happy with a flat. Further out, as mentioned already you have Fulwood, Eccleshall, Crosspool and Lodge Moor. Most of these areas have good bus connections and a (smallish) local supermarket.

The type of housing required will dictate the area your relative will live in. You will easily get a house in that budget, the question is do you want a terrace or a semi / detached house? You would look to the outer suburbs for a semi or detached house.

Sheffield is a very safe city and the areas already mentioned are great to live in. It is a city I highly recommended an one that I hope to move back to at one day.

This is the kind of thing you'd get for the top of your budget. I know the first two areas pretty well. The Wayland Rd one might get a bit noise from students on some weekends but all three are decent looking houses in good locations:

And if a flat (no back garden) will suffice, this is an excellent location and a nice, roomy flat:

    Thanks everyone for replying!

It's my sister and she knows she won't be driving to work, but is happy to cycle / bus / tram. She will prob want a house rather than a flat, 2-3 bedrooms so it does look like there's a lot of options - not sure on style / terraced etc yet.

Coming from down south it's a bit difficult to know what's good - totally different price range!

My daughter took her bike to Sheffield as a student but I don't think she used it - Sheffield has a few hills!! Maybe the locals have very strong legs if they can manage to climb up to Crookes from the City Centre on a bike!
