Multi-fuel stove - chimney liner needed?

SImilar position to OP - moved house, looking to change fireplace and try a mutifuel.
Did a lot of research and came to the conclusion that the way to tackle he question is to get the chimney swept first. Find a reputable sweep. They will tell you all you need to know.
Our house was built in mid 80's. The sweep came along, swept the chimney and said a liner was not required as it was clay lined.
A small number of fireplce installer said as much right from the first conversation, however many added lining onto the cost until I mentioned clay lining. Everyone one then agreed that it was not needed.
A 4 story townhouse in St Johns Wood would be old enough not to be clay lined so would have needed a liner.0 -
Thanks very much everyone. It sounds as though I definitely need to get someone round to run a smoke test and give some advice on the state of the chimney, and whether or not lining it would be a necessary precaution. I will consult a chimney sweep as well; I guess they know chimneys better than anyone.
