  • Depends how often you save and delete stuff, add and remove programs, etc.

I usually run Disc Cleanup, Error Checking, Defragmenting, and a full AV Scan, about once a week/fortnight.

    About once every when-I-get-around-to-it!
How do I add a signature?

Once every 3 years sounds about right.

It's done automatically since vista was introduced, and is largely a complete waste of time on 99% of systems.

No point defragging all the guff that gets onto yr system when on the net, loading programs, updates etc.

So the first thing to do is get rid of all the cr*p then defrag.

    Download ccleaner from here http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

install and run, this will get rid of the cr*p. The do a yr defrag.

How often? Well it depends on how heavily it is used - if its yr lifeblood, then perhaps monthly; if it used just occasionally then 6-12 months. No harm in doing it as often as you please (or remember!)

    Good luck

    My regimen:
    • Windows 95 - once a week
    • Windows 98 - once a week
    • Windows XP - once in a blue moon
    • Ubuntu - huh?
    • Windows 7 - never

In our experience of "blue moons", on XP, is probably fairly regularly, as stated previously.

But hey, folks on here only state their opinions, ours is based on experience of dealing with clients with XP since it originally came out, and defragging is one of the better options for speeding up a hard drive that has become badly fragmented.

There are, to be fair, other things that may be done to speed up PCs, such as managing what programs/services that open on booting, getting rid of programs/addons which have been downloaded by default, etc etc

    No doubt others will disagree..............

Having used win 7 and xp, my answer would be for win 7 dont bother more than once ever 6 months or so but for xp every week.

Im on xp now and it is always about 7-10% fragmented every time I run it.
