debt not decreasing despite payments

My wife defaulted on a debt of approximately £5000 with Barclays and subsequently agreed, with the agreement of the court, to pay a small amount per month,£30 initially but is now £40. The debt has repeatedly been bought by various companies and is now with Aktiv Kapital. The point of this thread is that the debt is approximately 25 yearsold and the sum of money paid back to all the various companies is close to,or exceeds, the amount initially owed but the present balance is over £4000.
I would appreciate any advice on how to investigate this with the companies involved and if this is legally correct

Hi Tom,
When a debt is sold on, the company can legally add their charges and fees etc.
She could try going back to the court to see if it can now be classed as paid, perhaps?I am employed as a manager in a financial services institution. My views are entirely my own.0
