Virgin airmiles query

I have made two trips to the US recently with Virgin and have 6916 airmiles on my Virgin Flying Club account. My sister has made only 1 trip with Virgin and has 3458 on her V FCC.

We were thinking of going again to the USA later this year and looked up our respective VFCC accounts to see if there was any benefit from using our airmiles. We were both quoted the same fare.

(At this stage we did not put in a date, just a general query into the Spending Calculator to see how much using our airmiles might save us.) Is there no difference depending on how many airmiles you have accumulated?

It looks like you need 2000 to get a reduced economy fare which you both have so you both meet the criteria for the discounted fare (It does not mention a bigger discount for more miles)
If you want a redemption flight where you just pay the taxes, you need 35,000

So basically you get a reduction for 2000 airmiles and no more off until you reach 35,000 so same reduction whether you have 2000 or 22000 airmiles ? Seems a bit daft.

Correct. You can also use 7,500 for Premium economy miles plus money fares or 15,000 for Upper Class m+m fares.

The downside to m+m fares is you do not get any miles for the flight you have booked, and sometimes the saving is very little.

Also, if you use the 35,000 for an economy flight you still have to pay all the taxes, which these days are the biggest portion of the fare.

Virgin airmiles hardly seams worth the bother, you get very little back for your loyality. Virgin Atlantic flights appear to be popular so I went with them earlier this year. The plane both ways was full to the brim, the food was disgusting, the service no better than most of the other carriers. Unfortunately was sat next to an obese person - no help from the stewards, they couldn't care less.

That was the first and last time we will fly Virgin.
