It sounds like most people here are talking about Alvogel.

It's an evil smelling brew of antiseptics, antibiotics and anaesthetics that looks like a black gloop and has fibres in it that makes it like cotton wool.

It's very effective at soothing dry/infected sockets. It is packed into the socket, but it does slowly come out over the next few days.

Hope it's helped it feel better, but infected sockets, even though they can be really painful when they strike, do sort themslves out after a few days.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Dry socket - very painful. Had them a few times ( I have a grand total of about 9 teeth left because of my condition) I have had all wisdom and back teeth removed.

The iodine strip is to help prevent further infection. It does generally fall out after 24 hours. I use the strongest Listerine (6 in one) when that happens but be very careful and gentle.

They actually sell the 6 in 1 at Aldi which is exactly the same stuff and cheaper. Don't worry, once your ABs kick in it will get easier.

i had a dry socket, agony, the worst pain ever, had it packed with this sedative antiseptic, this just dissolved itself after a week, also took 1 ibrofen, and 1 co-codamol together every 4 hours this seemed the best pain relief better than paracetamols, did float around for about 2-3 weeks before pain subsided, but found this combination of tablets worked to dull the pain to bearable, i also couldnt get an appointment with nhs as it was a bank holiday, i used a family members denplan number, phoned this, went along to the emergency appointment as this person, then when i got there explained my situation, , the dentist took pity and treated me, believe it or not at no extra cost, would have paid him anything to get me out of the pain i was in, Have now taken out denplan, and will never be without it after that good luck

I would ask that people do not give advice about medications etc. Ibuprofen cannot be taken by people with asthma as it mat set off or make an attack worse.
Also we do not know ops medical history, they may have kidney, liver problems, they may be taking other medications etc .
The same goes for advice about rinsing with mouthwashes or salty water, good for some people but not good if patient on anti coagulants or aspirin or has bleeding disorder or has certain other medical problems. Specific advice needs to be given by someone who knows ops medical history etc.

Finally the biggest factor in dry/infected socket is smoking. Smoking works in two ways it shuts down the blood supply locally so clots don't form as well and it inhibits the immune system. Smokers are more likely to get dry socket so if you smoke try not to immediately after extraction and cut down as much as possible over next few days.

Ouch I had this several years ago after having wisdom tooth out. Mine was so swollen I couldn't eat and felt v. sick. Couldn't even manage painkillers. Had to go into hospital, was given morphine, and salt rinses. Fortunately just before I was due to go for an op to drain the site it burst and began to heal. Think your sounds different if it is dry. Wisdom teeth seem to cause so much trouble. As said above it is best to seek medical help so as not to exasperate the ;problem. hope you feel better soon.

I had dry socket when I had one of my wisdom teeth removed.
They packed the hole with what looked like tobacco to me and it fell out pretty soon. Because the pain wasn't getting any better and the site was still warm to touch (outside on my cheek/neck, not the hole - never touch the area in your mouth) I went back when I could. The repacked it and sent me on my way with the usual advice - no smoking, no drinking, no chewing on that side, keep it clean etc etc
I was managing my pain with a cocktail of painkillers so was able to wait over a weekend to get an appointment to get it repacked.
