british gas disconnection charge

sorry i'm new, tried search but could not find a thread. i've recently changed my gas and electric supplier from british gas and they are charging me a £45 disconnection fee. does anyone know if this is legal? I have been told by someone that it may not be. I would be grateful for an answer before I pay this charge. also will someone move this if it's in the wrong place thanks.

You must have registered for one of their price protection packages, in which case yes, the charge is legal. That looks like the gas cancellation fee for price protection 2010, if it is you may have another £30 charge on your electricity bill when it comes. If you are on 2010, I'd be surprised if you have found a rate much cheaper elsewhere.

Thanks for that, I used confused.com to find an alternative supplier and they reckon Scottish power are cheaper, it remains to be seen! They also have price protection till 2010 and have just announced a price drop for gas.:T

When you did the comparison did you put in you were on BG's standard rate or did you enter you were on 2010, which is cheaper than their standard rate?

In my region (Swalec) for average consumption, direct debit, the only supplier currently cheaper is Powergen's online tariff - by £3 per year.

I would recommend you run the comparison again.
