Offsetting expenses against Paye

Hi,
I left my employment in December 2010 and have since been working on a company project. I was wondering if I am able to deduct the expenses I have had while researching the company e.g. my mortgage since I work from home, lawyer fees, etc...
By the way my only income in 2011-2012 has been deffered Paye from my previous employer.
Thanks

i would guess you have to apply to go on self assessment to claim expenses--PAYE is just for straight forward employment

If you are working on a company project why isn't the company paying the expenses connected to the project? (And why are you working on a company project if you are not employed by them anyway?? Are you self-employed?)
