Flights to Fiji March 2013 - any experts/advice?

Hi Everyone!
I'm hoping there will be someone with much more knowledge than me out there who may be able to help!
Me and the OH need to fly to Fiji from London next March in order to attend a family wedding. His family is in Australia/New Zealand so no-one there we can compare flights & prices with!
I've contacted STA travel, Trailfinders and Travelbag and am waiting for a call back from each with any flights they can find.
Ultimately, I need to do this as cheaply as possible (and I know it won't be cheap in any case) but flights seem to begin on a simple search at around £1300 minimum for direct flights.
One travel agent suggested we may be able to do a London/LA/Fiji return flight for around £1000, giving us a stop-over of a few days in LA on the way out. I can't see how to search for flights like this in places like Expedia - would I do it as multiple destinations or would that increase the price from just an extended layover which is what we're looking for?
If there is anyone out there who knows any tricks of the trade to find cheap flights for this, or can advise whether it's worth booking now or whether a certain time of year may be cheaper for Fiji bookings, or anything else that may help, I would be hugely grateful to hear from you!
Thanks in advance for any replies!

Try Kayak.com
You'll be able to do a search with stop overs.
Doing a quick search (bearing in mind I don't know your dates or how long you want to go for) I can find flights going on the 04/03/2013-25/03/2012 stopping in South Korea for £885
However, if you use the multi-city option on Kayak, you'll be able to find flight with stops in LAX.
Expedia also has a multi city search option. If you go on the website, click on flights, there should be a multiple destinations option next to single/return flights0 -
I suppose it all depends on whether you want to get to Fiji and back as quickly as possible or if you want to take advantage of the trip, make a real holiday of it, and have a stopover on the way there and/or back. You could even use it as an excuse to travel around the world - fly something like LAX on the way out and somewhere in Asia, such as Hong Kong, on the way back.0

Realised and Doshwaster, thank you do much for your replies and help! Very useful - we had a look over the weekend and with your tips managed to find a flight that suited us for under £1k - when we started looking the week before all we were finding was £1500 flights! So that's a decent chunk saved.
Thanks again, much appreciated.
Now to look into hotels!!
