What car?

Hi All,

It's not going to be economical to get my current 11yr old fiesta through its MOT so I'm looking for a new car and I was looking for some advice on what make/model I should be looking for. I was looking at another fiesta but other people have said the "newer" fiestas aren't as reliable as the older ones. So any suggestions on make and model I should be looking at? I need:

  • Diesel - I do a lot of miles
  • Relatively economical - but something with a bit of bite for overtaking would be good
  • Not older than 7 years old
  • Not more than £5k (but obviously less is better)
  • Reliable - Did I say I do a lot of miles...?
  • Ideally hatchback
  • Ideally 6 speed - relatively low gearing on my fiesta doesn't make it as economical as it should be

Any pointers so I can do some more research would be welcome :)

The "new" (current, and previous 02-08) Fiesta is very reliable, a hell of a lot more reliable and better built than a Leon in my opinion.

The Fiesta diesels are PSA (Peugeot) diesel engines and are pretty solid, only regular complaint is the injector seals but it's more of an annoying fault rather than something that'll leave you stranded at the roadside, and it's not too expensive to solve.

1.4 TDCi qualifies for £30p/a VED as well, my mother has one (drives 1500-2000 miles a month) and averages 62mpg.....

    Regards,
    Andy

Why do you want a diesel anyway? Petrols are cheaper to run, and faster too. The idea that diesels are cheaper is a myth. Just because they produce stinking fumes and clank about when idling, it doesn't necessarily follow that they're more efficient. They're just slow, smelly and loud! Like buses.

My diesel Civic is pretty quick, does 65mpg on the motorway (80%) of my mileage and gets around 50/55mpg around town. it's not slow, doesn't smell and isn't that loud really...

I'd love a petrol but for longevity and purchase price diesels are better value for money.

Thanks all for your comments, any other suggestions very welcome.

Whats wrong with this model? (not specifically this car). One this age will still be under 5yr warranty. I have a petrol version, cheap to run.

About 25,000 miles a year. It consists mainly of a regular 160 mile A-road round trip 2/3 times a week with some motorway driving.
