solicitor necessary?

Just wondering, hypothetically speaking, is a solicitor really absolutely necessary in conveyancing? Does it make any difference if the property is bought at auction - does the buyer need a solicitor by law?
I am sure I will be told not to skimp on a solicitor, that they will spot things I wouldn't. But at the end of the day I will be contracturally obligated to buy the property if I am the winning bidder. So there will be very little for the solicitor to actually do.
The property is being sold by a bank in possesion.

You don't need a solicitor by law, you need one to protect your interests.
When a property goes to auction, there is a legal pack and that is what should be shown to the solicitor beforehand. They are able to interpret not only what is there, but what ISN'T!Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

I intend to get the legal pack tommorow. £20 for a pdf file! Someone knows how to make money.
I am considering giving this to a solicitor also tomorrow, the auction is on Thursday, will this be long enough for the solicitor to check it over properly?
