Wacom tablet cover problem

Hi all
I was wondering if anyone on here uses a Wacom Intuos 4 tablet?
I've just bought one for my son at uni and he's having a problem with the 'drawing area'. It's a known problem, the surface is getting scratched and the pen nibs are wearing down fast.
I understand that a cover can be either bought or made for the drawing area, and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations or solutions to this?
Cheers

Edit - it's the XL size if that makes any difference.

The atmosphere is currently filled with hypocrisy so thick that it could be sliced, wrapped, and sold in supermarkets for a decent price and labeled, 'Wholegrain Left-Wing, Middle-Class, Politically-Correct Organic Hypocrisy'.
