opening first bank account at 90

my nan, who lives with us, has inherited some money.

What will she need to open a bank account so that she can bank what monies there is and also pay the outstanding creditors of the estate.

She has a post office pension card account which is just where her pension goes in and she then takes it all out every week. She does get a statement.

Also she has a birth certificate.

She has never had a passport, driving licence, no bills in her name.

Not sure if your nans mobile or not but take her down the bank yourself as I am sure they will sort something out.

If she cannot get to a bank then try applying online (help her through it if needs be). If she has been at her addres for a while & is on electoral roll then the bank (certainly Natwest can) MAY be able to verify everything electronically. She would then just need to sign the form (which will be posted out) and return in the prepaid envelope.

Do you, or someone else, have a Power Of Attorney for your nan? You'll probably need it to help her through this.

That will make it a whole lot easier for you to do what your nan wants you to do.

You didn't mention how much money your nan is expecting -if it is more than £85K, make sure you distribute it safely across more than one bank, preferably somewhere where the money earns interest.

Once safely deposited, you can then spend time with your nan to understand what she'd like to do with the money. Hope she will be able to enjoy some treats she always wanted!
