Goto https://www.crocus.co.uk and use their online 'right plant, right place' system. The RHS also have an online plant selector, where you specify the conditions

Hosta grow very well in the shade, I've just bought a few from ebay to start me off, you can get some striking colours.

Periwinkle will thrive, evergreen too, and a nice ground filler, albeit somewhat invasive.

Busy lizzies do well in shade - the white ones really liven up a shady spot. Perennials include hardy geranium phaeum. There are lots more ideas at: http://www.plantsforshade.co.uk/

I put a honeysuckle in our darkish bit, plant and forget, it'll look after itself :)

My shaded bit behind the shed left to its own devices brings up dock leaves, moss, and more interesting stuff like foxgloves, wolfsbane, and now some form of periwinkles. Lots of other stuff too. I quite like my wild flower patch!

To add to the good recommnedations:

    Hellebores grow everywhere,
    Ferns tolerate shade too,
Dicentra (bleeding heart) manages in a shady corner of my garden
