When are new credit cards sent out?

in Credit cards
I know I should just forget about it and go out & enjoy the sunshine but it's annoying me. So -
Just wondering how long before a credit card expires is the new one usually sent out?
My Capital One card expires in August (08/12) so when I received I new card in the post I just assumed it was a replacement. The new card's valid from 05/12 so I can start using it straight away.
It wasn't until I had a closer look to see how long the card was valid for, to see if I was trustworthy enough to have a card with more than 18 months on it
, that i noticed the expiry date (08/12) was the same as my old card.
I emailed them to let them know [STRIKE]of their incompetence[/STRIKE] since I'd prefer not to end up without a card (don't need it, just like the cashback I get from it) and also as I thought I'd warn them in case they'd sent out wrongly dated cards to other people.
Their only reply was Please note that we're unable to send you card with a new expiry date at the moment. We'll send your replacement card just before your current card expires.
So what was the point of sending me a card for 3 months when I've already got one? I'm guessing it must have been a computer and/or human malfunction since the only other reason I can think of would be if I'd lost my card & requested a replacement. But if that was the case surely my old card would have been locked. And besides trying to order a replacement card on their website is probably harder than trying to email them. I'd know if I'd done it.
Vent over.

Could be a system upgrade that means replacing existing cards before their expiry.0

Sounds like security upgrades to me or a public key change, although my Capital One card is valid until 2014. But then again, they may be planning to switch you to Mastercard from Visa or visa versa. It depends on what they're planning on doing with your account, but the card is certainly valid even if it's only for a few months before you get a new replacement.0 -

Just occurred to me. The new card is a contactless one. So that's probably why a new card's been issued. Still seems fairly pointless sending out a card now when I'll be getting a new one in a couple of months. Especially since the facility is only currently available locally in a few places.
And after having a look at the local list it seems most of the businesses currently accepting contactless cards are not the type of places you'd be likely to spend under £15 (car showroom, kitchen showroom, travel agents, solicitors). In fact very few of them look like places you'd be likely to spend that little. The most popular looks to be a well known junk food chain who are making it easier for people to get fat(ter) quicker.0 -
Reading this thread just reminded me of when I was in the bank just before Christmas and overheard a chap complaining that his card had expired a couple of weeks earlier and he hadn't been sent a new one.
He was getting quite stroppy about it and insisted that his card had expired on the 4th of December. The member of staff politely explained that 04/12 actually meant April 2012 :rotfl:0 -
Hello Friend,
I believe this could be a system error because it also happened with me as well and when I contacted the customer care department they told me that its an system error which has been rectified. Just ignore or inform the customer care department.
