Bike/Car/Motor Insurance renewal saving tip

Although my recent experience was regards motorbike insurance through Carol Nash, I presume this tip could help anyone regards bike/car/motor insurance renewal.

I recently had my bike insurance renewal notice through the post. Much the same price as last year, but thought hey, it should have maybe come down a bit,an extra years no claims, etc. Someone phoned me from Carol Nash reminding me it was up for renewal. I asked if they had checked for a cheaper policy. He replied yes, they did that automatically, but said I may be able to get a cheaper quote by doing it online with Carol Nash. I promptly went onto Carol Nash website for an online quote. Put in all the same details as previous policies,etc........I was then given a quote, a quote which offered me a policy with the exact same insurance company, the exact same policy they had quoted me for through the post for renewal........at an ASTOUNDING 33% less than what I had been quoted through the post!!!!! I wont go into my personal figures, but I've saved a small fortune, 33%, simply by going to the insurance brokers website and getting a quote online, as I say, for the exact same policy with the same company!...33% less!!!!! That's a huge difference!
Moral of the story, when your bike or car insurance is up for renewal, don't just take that renewal price as gospel,go to the companies website and get a quote yourself. If my experience is anything to go off, chances are you will save a large amount of money.

Very common for brokers and insurers to give new customer discounts, online discounts etc.

There are hundreds of posts about it - also would shop around every year too as lots of companies offer new discounts and also several giving cashback via Quidco etc. May be worth you reading the article on the site about saving for insurance and shopping around?

I read the article on motorbike insurance,etc.....but it didn't give this tip on renewal regards postal renewal quote and online quote difference.
I doubt it's worth me shopping around, as Carol Nash are quite competative, (apart from when it comes to postal renewal quotes ;) ), and you get breakdown recovery free in the policies with them, which is worth over £100 on it's own.

You need to always shop around at renewal, even if shopping around means getting quotes anonymously with the same insurer. Most renewals with existing insurers are overpriced, and rely on the customer inertia to simply accept the infalted price. Even phoning up to haggle normally has a good result.

Is "anonymously" the key? I've tried to get an on-line quote from my current insurer, being completely honest with name address car details etc., but every time I wade through their 3-page form it comes back with "Error. We have logged this."

They do not say what the error is, which is a fat lot of good. I've emailed them - finding an email address was another 20 minutes work - but somehow don't think they will reply.

So, should I make up false ID to get an on-line quote out of my own insurer, because I think the current quote is overpriced by about 100%, having used all the comparethemarket and similar websites to key in the same car, same people, same address, same everything?

Blue Parrot, they may have a problem with their website? Maybe phone them, explain their online quotation system isn't working properly, see what they say. I can't see it being due to you being an existing policy holder.....but I may be wrong.
