What proportion of take-home pay do people spend on mortgage costs?

            Ours is about 25% but I would be comfortable taking it up to 50% when we move. As pink teapot said, it does depend on the actual numbers.0

            We are house hunting at the moment, and our rent is 22% of joint take home.
 If we were to buy the house we live in, it would be about 28% which feels too much. We would seriously struggle if either of us lost our job.
