Maybe not. It's 'buyer beware' here I think. She knowingly paid out (i.e. they didn't pin her down and force her), so even though the company turned out to be dodgy, the transaction is still seen as legitimate. Just as if you give your friend money for something sensible then they spend it recklessly, you still gave them the money.
Worth a chat with the bank I think, but it's not clear.0 -

She will have given all her bank details to the merchant in the knowledge it was for a direct debit.
The dd guarantee system doesn't safeguard us from making purchases from scammers!0
