The Hyundai range have very well equipped models for the price these days and come out well in reliability surveys. The five year transferrable warranty is good too; the main downside is higher than average depreciation from new, though that does make nearly new ones generally good value.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0

Thanks - I have spent a couple of days thinking the Hyundai i20 could be the one. I have spent a lot of time trawling the web and found quite a few disgruntled customers, i.e. clutch burnt out after 7k mileage and the dealer said it was wear and tear etc. Maybe it is just the case that you generally only hear off people who are not happy.
Having looked a few cars, we do have the 9k budget therefore currently am favouring the Fabia 1.2 or i20.0 -
Try some of the online brokers for the best price. I used Drive the Deal to get a new Skoda for less than year old ones from main dealers.0
