Our aquaponics system is growing our garden veg as quickly as I've ever seen stuff grow. You see very little of aquaponics in the uk and I just wonder why. Anyone else doing it ?

I've thought about it and it's a great idea in urban settings, but less so in a backyard garden - I guess it's an economy of scale, to have the turn over of fish and veg etc you need a polytunnel, greenhouse or grow lights, otherwise the tanks are likely to freeze over the winter.

I thought about converting an IBC into a small scale system to raise Tilapia but came at a loss as where to put it or where to get the fish from locally. It's an interesting project and if I find myself in spare IBCs I'll think about it. There's a project in North London, not sure if it's still going though - I emailed the owner but haven't heard back

Been doing it every summer for some years now. i made up a container that i suspend above the pond and direct water to it from the waterfall. (similar to a flood and drain system) The result is rapidly growing veg and the pond nitrogen levels drop very nicely keeping the koi happy.

I have done hydroponics before but reading wikipedia aquaponics is slightly different. I do have a half whisky barrel set up as a pond (which means not very big) but no pump in it so I dont think I will be trying aquaponics any time soon. I dont think your piccies worked Micro. Would love to see your set up though.

If you have the barrel all you need is a £10 pump and you're away (hopefully my pic is now up ?)
