Header tank suddenly filling for hours and really noisy - Help!

I have never heard my header tank filling before. Monday night a couple of hours after having a bath it sounded like a bath was being run in the loft. I went up to check the large tank and it looked really empty. It took hours for the water to stop running in but eventually did.
Did not notice any noise yesterday, but tonight I had a bath around 8pm and it's now gone 3am and the noise has woken me up. It's been filling again for hours and still is! Nothing is overflowing outside.
House has been empty all day and only hot water used really was a shower in the morning and bath tonight.
Can anyone help me diagnose the problem?

Run some hot water off and check how FAST the tank is filling from the ball c**k. It should fill fast.
If not, could be a bit of crap in the ball c**k valve.0 -
It's a steady flow but again tank looks very empty considering only 1 shower today run. it did eventually stop filling around 4am from the bath last night. My airing cupboard pipes and the pipes under my sink are pouring off condensation will the volume of cold water coming through them.
It's still filling again now from 1 shower this morning. I have no obvious leak anywhere that I can see.0
