    Debt-free and Proud!
Have booked mine. I have been offered the £75 guarantee covering £650 worth of repairs should they come up via the MOT. Does anyone think this is worth doing? - oh sorry i have just looked again and you have to have 3 months before the MOT is due!

My local halfords autocentre is actually quite good. Not got any complaints with them.

I took advantage of the half price MOT this year, car passed first time, one advisory that one of my orange indicator bulbs was starting to flake.

I also booked my car in for the free 15 point check a couple of weeks before the MOT, so they could give me an indication to anything obvious. Was told tyres were low, but still legal, so got these changed elsewhere before the MOT.

This ad from Halfords is a total scam. I took my car in, told I needed about 500 quids worth of work to pass , and around 1600 worth of work 'advised.' Took it back to good local garage............passed for a couple of hundred. Complained to Halfords, who at least had the decency to refund the test cost.

I bought one of these "MOT Guarantees" I think they call them, when they were Nationwide before Halfords bought the chain. Paid £110 for 3 years worth of cover. This covers a range of MOT repair work, and after 2 years now it has saved me a small fortune (allegedly) in repairs!. It covered nearly £600 work in my last MOT just gone. So yes, I believe they are worth it. The only conditions I have to fulfill, and I guess the one you refer to as well, is that you have to have an Annual Service through them, and you have to have your MOT with them, but thats it as far as I know. But do read the small print. Worth going for imo.

I think with these things it depends on who does the test. Last time I used Nationwide/National or whatever they used to be called was when they took Tesco vouchers and paid for an MOT with those.

Car failed on a few things (which I got done elsewhere) but when they quoted for the work they wanted to charge me £50 a side to align the headlights!!!!!

I nearly pee'd myself laughing I couldn't believe it, I fixed that myself took all of about 30 seconds each side to adjust the alignment screw with a screwdriver which then passed on the retest.

Cor blimey the cheek of some of these places. I think the moral is by all means use whoever for your MOT but just be suspicious of any failures. I always used to make a point of mentioning that I had a mate that does repairs so i'll get him to fix any fails and that cut a lot of crap out immediately

Quite a bit of discussion on this thread.
MSE itself has a section all about MOTs which is worth a look for more information:

I took my daughters car to Halfords last year and it failed on a rack boot and track rod end, due to having a bad arm at the time i asked for a quote for the work, i nearly fell over when i was quoted £45 for the track rod end (not the end of the world) and then they told me £45 for a rack boot. I asked the manager why so much for the boot since the car would already be stripped for the rod end and he said not his fault, thats what his computer says.
Also tried to tell me that since it failed, her existing 3 weeks mot were cancelled and the car was illegal to drive, never heard so much boiiocks from one mouth.
    Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.
