Gas BBQ - how much gas

Options
We need to take a gas BBQ for an upcoming holiday to south of france. As they dont rent them and you can only have gas we are going to have to take a small portable one and cylinder.

Personally I much prefer charcoal so Ive never had a gas one.

I know it depends on lots of factors but to have a small 1-2 burner gas bbq on an average setting for an hour a day for 7 days how much gas would I need in kg?

As I said I know there are lots of variables but I dont want to take 11kg if I could take 4kg as obviously space in the car is limited.

Thanks all

A 4.5kg calor bottle will last. I use at most 1kg a day, running a fridge 24hrs, cooking breakfast, dinner, tea, with two burners for several hours boilng rice potatoes etc, with the grill a lot of the time, and running the water heater in my van. Some bottles have lasted 2 weeks, with a bit less cooking. For just a bbq, our two burner bbq uses 500g an hour of propane on the rating plate, so 9 hours from a 4.5kg propane bottle, even longer on butane.
  • I had a 9kg one last me 4 years when I lived in Sydney and I probably averaged one use per week there. It still had some in it when I moved so I left it for the next person. That was with a Weber Q.

Butne/propane gas is widely available all over France-every supermarket sells it.
If you are travelling by Eurotunnel, you'll need to declare it.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

But you'll also need to spend on a new regulator, then be stuck with a gas bottle you need to bring back, and can't refill in the uk. Camping Gaz is the only one used in the uk, and europe, and the biggest is under 3kg and pricier than a flogas 4.5kg. I've picked up flogas cylinders from ebay, local tips (for the price of a drink) and even flogas outlets have occasionally waived the bottle fee for a new bottle, and I've just paid for the gas.
