My middle son will be 4 in September.

He asked for a Transformer and the Mack (from Cars) transporter. There are also some Bob the Builder vehicles in the pipeline as he (and his older brother up until recently) collects the friction range.

I also know he will be equally as happy if he got new toy cars (Tesco are very good for these) or anything 'Thomas'.

Dr Who would be a disaster for him - big brother (soon to be 6) loves it, but middle son is for some reason petrified of it (he's never seen the programme, or even adverts for it) - you can't even stand near the Toys R Us display if they have the sound effects switched on.

Noting the comments about swingball and scooters, it might be worth seeing if this is still in stock near you - http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3668724.htm.

We've not opened the swingball yet, but eldest was very happy with the scooter as an early birthday present at Easter.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Would definitely agree with swingball one of the greatest things ever invented, it is very good at teaching a child co-ordination, much easier for them to start with than playing with a bat and ball.

Another favourite in our house is an enormous tub of chalks for drawing on the patio; any friends that come round join in too.

My now 4 year old nephew gets so many toys it is hard to find something that he will appreciate.

After much deliberation I bought him a Lightning McQueen (from Cars) sleeping bag with attached pillow.

He was so pleased with it and did insist sleeping in it for the first week!! It is handy for holidays, sleepovers etc too.

I have lots of friends kids to buy for and often get them board games. If you look on mailorderexpress.co.uk - I think it has so many original games.

Things like "junior pass the bomb", "anatomix" "junior mastermind" "junior outburst "etc are great fun and educational. My nieces have a garden shed full of games and we often play as a family there really is so much more choice.

Check out the supermarkets as well though they will often have good deal but for original games this is a geat site

  • Why do you feel obliged to spend £30? Most of the suggestions posted so far cost far less than this and as has been mentioned a 4 year old does not understand value.

Why not buy some new track / extra bits for a mechanical set he already is keen on (eg lego, mechano, brio (or tesco cheap compatable!!), etc etc) and then buy him a Post Office Child Bond which will mature in 5 yrs time (and extendable by another 5 yrs). At this age he will be into electronic bits and bobs which will cost a lot more and he would be grateful for the investment and 'delayed' present.

My 4 year old godson is mad about the PLanet Protectors and Biker Mice From Mars and Lightning McQueen. (He is about to turn 5 and I got him a Cars large storage box and some Cars art kits all from The Works. Whole LOADS of stuff for £15 altogether!)

Make sure you ask if there's anything his parents would rather he didn't have - eg my godson is not allowed anything Power Rangers as the show turns him violent. His parents also will not allow him to have any kind of weapon (ie toy gun, sword etc).

My son's 4 and at the moment he loves spiderman, k'nex and his scooter.

Went into a bargain shop the other day and bought him a £1.99 "sports day" pack and he has not put it down since.

Ikkleosu - Good point you made there, my son loves power rangers but sometimes he does try to copy the moves.
I also wont let my son have guns or swords.

    Hiya,

What about a sleep over kit containing:-

A pair of jammies, which don't need to cost much at all -say £5 if that

A kids trolley case (Tesco was doing a trolley case, gym bag and back pack beside me for £9.97), but here is links from their site (unfortunately they don't have the same pack which was on offer at mine, which was a Tesco Extra, but it gives you the idea http://direct.tesco.com/search/default.aspx?search=kids+trolley+case&confirm.x=0&confirm.y=0

A pair of slippers or slipper sox - say £2 if that.

A book for reading at bed time.

You could also change it from a sleep over kit, to arts and crafts, holiday, the list goes on. Even if they have a train set they particularly love, even building blocks, you can buy a pack of those and put in in the case and hey presto a toy which can go everywhere with them if needbe. Handy for grannies and even wee boys love trolley cases.

With 3 sons in 3 years, I remember the birthday hunt well. Mind you it's still hard now they are teenagers. No make that harder!

Good luck and erm can I request a piece of cake please. (love birthday cake. :j)
