I agree with your friend, kids of 4 don't appreciate money could be 30p as a opposed to £30 for all they know.
Disney Store is full of the new Power Rangers "range" incldung the costumes, I'm sure he would love them.0 -
Dr Whoooooo (hey) Dr Who....0

A trumpet or a drum kit. They love em.... Your friend might not thou !!!0

My 4 Year old likes Jigsaws, Art things (especially messy stuff  ), anything to do with Bob the Builder or Thomas the Tank engine, plays on his Scooter loads, Lego, simple board games such as Hungry Hippos, Crocodile Dentist, Magnetic Fishing, Toy Food and toy Till (plays shops), wooden Brio traintrack, Car Garage, Playdough, PJ's or clothes with childs favourite character on.
Hope I have given you some ideas.

IMHO you can't go wrong with any sort of constrction toy (e.g. Lego, Connex, Magnetix, Junior Meccano) as it is not a problem if he already has some... adding more just makes it more fun/interesting. Look at Early Learning Centre (ELC) either online or, better still, go to your local branch if you are able so that you can look at what you're buying. It's even better if you can be there when he unwraps it to help him build whatever the picture is on the box! All of the above give an age range so you can check it will be suitable.“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”

My son turned 6 in March and my sister gave him a Swingball set (one of the ones with the base you fill with water/sand so it can go anywhere). Anyway, my 4 year old has not left it alone since it was put up. He's just as happy knocking the ball about on his own as with his brother or us, and he's outside in the fresh air. I wouldn't have thought of it for his age, but he's over the moon with his brother's pressie:rotfl: . I think they're about £10-£15 so not at the £30 budget, but then again that's better for your pocket and a four year old isn't exactly going to stop you at the door for not spending enough;)
Another idea (again from my sister - she's great at this) was a scooter with lights on - I think they're about £25 from Woolies etc. He got this at Christmas and anytime we go out he's desperate to take it with us!
One thing I would mention; clothes (although I love my boys getting them and, after the big day, they do really like them) don't get the same reaction as a toy! If you like a big smily face from them, it's not likely to happen with a jumper! At least not with my two:rotfl:
ps Better-offin-PETES-pocket - tsk tsk, you're so naughty! We've had a saxaphone, an electronic piano, a drum, maracas, an electric guitar (with microphone!) and harmonicas from my in-laws and so called friendsWe sooo love them....

Only caveat to buying construction toys is to make sure it is the same as anything they already, nothing worse than being giving Duplo if you already have Mega Bloks for instance.
My son was five this month, so a little older, but he loves Power Rangers (figures currently 2 for 1 in Tesco!) and Transformers. He is also obsessed with Doctor Who.It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0
