OP, I've just come across this link about making plastic bottles into brooms. altohugh I was looking for something for Brownies, I thought it might be interesting to you, especially if you can collect enough plastic bottles before your event.

Lol. Thank you. It does look sweet.

I must confess that I really like the look of the compost heap shower water heater on that site. Free hot water!0 -
If everyone leaves the house turns off their heating and huddles in the village hall the planet will be saved.
And they will be in perfect location in the event of Zombie Apocalypse.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

I wouldn't want to be in a big (huddled) group come Zombie Apocalypse, the virus would spread like wildfire under those conditions. And resources would be spread too thin for my liking, far better to be home where you can retreat to upstairs/the attic and defend your position (and have less chance of detection in the first place)
I have the Zombie Handbook and had to stop reading it before bed as it was giving me nightmares :rotfl:
Back on topic, I think demonstrations and/or local information would be a good idea.:j0 -
Hi
I just helped out at a local green event and the things I found helpful were:
- a Green councillor was present and ready to answer any questions
- the local Transition Group was there (is that what you are part of?). They inspired me in lots of ways.
- the local furniture recycling people had a stall where they promoted themselves.
- other "stalls" included a conservation group and even a professional insulator.
For me information and meeting with like-minded people trumps freebies everytime. Some local veg is a nice idea though, the thought that it's grown on your doorstep is warming.0 -
as you say it is located in a village hall LS, then make it a village 'Event'. call it 'Greensleeves evening' or such, and dont make it just about gardening - make it about local artisans and make it 'fun'! collect some prizes and have a treasure hunt or tombola or a local talent competition (get everyone coming to vote for the best display/funniest/most energy saving..........get the local kids involved by contacting the school and asking them to involve the children to 'design a garden/scarecrow/water device and they get a prize to be awarded on the night (that ensures a load of kids and parents attend!).
but make SURE that YOUR stalls are the biggest and most interesting!
enough for now - I wish you luck but if you're in Surrey I can't attend hun - sorry!0 -

A couple of things that occur to me are:
- free herbs
- a local allotment group sell off excess seedlings, eg tomato plants at 10-20p each
Personally, if it was child-friendly and not too late in the evening, then I'd attend and be interested in the plants. However, if your fellow villagers are mostly older or with a sufficient supply of babysitters then that wouldn't be a problem.
What you probably need to overcome is apathy. If it's a small village, make it more of a social event and some people will turn up even if they're not terribly interested in the theme - and that will bring people who are interested. Don't bother with handicraft/jewellery for sale. Lay on some tea, coffee and biscuits (free or charged) and give people a reason to put it in their calendars.0
