Hi guys,
If a company want to deduct money from someones account, can they do so with acc number and sort code?
A company have asked me tom supply them my bank details so they can refund some charges I incurred while driving one of their courtesy cars.
But I am cautious of giving my bank details and wondered if anyone can tell me the risks here?
Thanks,
Z

It's normal practice to give your sort code and account number for receiving money. They worst they could do is set up a direct debit on your account and take money that way, but you would be entitled to an immediate refund if you disputed it with your bank. How else do you expect them to reimburse you? You can't expect people to send cheques any more for example, which after all would you you their sort code and account number.0

whenever you give some-one a cheque or use your debit card the details of your sort code and a/c number are available0

To withdraw anything would be fraud and contrary to popular belief, most companies are not fraudulent.
Short of committing identity fraud the worst they could do is set up a Direct Debit but it is due to this very risk that the Direct Debit Guarantee exists allowing you to cancel any DD you want and have an instant refund for any DD payment that you dispute as genuine/ valid/ correct
To be able to get the authority to set up DDs they have to have gone through a fairly long and painful process in the first place.0 -
Thanks guys.
So it's relatively safe providing bank details
.
I'll just have to monitor the acc and hope they don't try and take any DDs.. Bit concerning this can happen as what if someone didn't notice?0 -
give them a savings account then they cant set up direct debits on your account and you still get the money0

Have you never given your bank details to anyone? An employer? A company you have a DD set up with? Never given a cheque to anyone? People have been giving these details for years and it's extremely rare anything would occur from it! Been smoke free for 4 years!! :beer:0
