DVD/codec....?

+1 to VLC. Have been using it for years - its an open source project so it can be considered "safe". Personally I avoid "codec packs" like the plague as they are sometimes a bit dodgy I've found.
Think of VLC a an alternative for Windows Media Player - use the file menu to open the file you want to watch, or the DVD you want to play etc.0 -
I too avoid codec packs. All these players will work without additional codecs:
-VLC
-Media Player Classic Home Cinema
-Mirillis Splash Player Lite
-GOM Player
VLC is the most capable, but doesn't work well with HD files unless the pc has a decent processor or graphics acceleration.0 -
Visit the DIVX website and download their codec bundle - its 100% safe and has always solved any plaback issues I've experienced.

They want xvid, not divx. Another vote for VLC personally.0

My earlier link was for version 1.1.9
Here is the latest Windows version before Version 2(which some have reported not to like).
VLC Player 1.1.11
Perhaps wait a while before installing Version 2.0
