Conservatories........

I know I am possibly asking a "how long is a bit of string" question here, but anyway.......

Can anyone give me a ball park figure on cost? I am reluctant to get quotes at the moment, as it is just the beginnings of an idea, and I do not want to be hounded by sales people nor waste their time :D

Can anyone recommend any good companies? (either nationally or I am in SE) Or bad ones to avoid :o

Many thanks

However much it is its a waste of money. Too cold in winter, too hot in summer, not as comfortable as your actual lounge, hardly anybody with a conservatory ever actually spends any time in there!

I think my parents paid about £15k for theirs, but that was about 15 years ago and it is a very big conservatory.

It's a really long and boring story but I need my house to be a little bit bigger and I can't afford to move :o

You might be better off asking in the DIY and home improvement forum.

But yes, it is a "piece of string" question as there are so many variables... size, design, materials, location, foundations, ventilation, standard of finish, are you going to build it yourself from scratch, use a kit, or just get a builder in to do the lot etc etc.

Then you may be better off building an extension. As has been pointed out, conservatories are not really ideal living space year round. They are meant for growing plants in.

New it'll vary between 5K (very small) to 20K+ for a very large one.

Second hand: you'd be able to pick up all the UPVC bits for not very much (£500 to £1500).
This will pick you up a good, largish, one.
The building work and installation shouldn't set you back a huge amount more (say £3k+).

I sold mine for less than £1K and it was 6m x3.2m (I even included all the blinds, window sills, etc.).

This isn't mine but it gives you an example of what is out there:-

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/White-UPVC-conservatory-approx-11-5ft-x-9-5ft-/290715185023?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Conservatories_ET&hash=item43aff9af7f#ht_500wt_1204

This one would be about £10K new i'd expect (depending on area).

Thank you, I don't really think the chances of getting permission for that is likely-I live in quite a snug estate

size for size, is an extension likely to cost more. I know these are carp questions sorry :o
