Keyboard problems - help!

I have what strikes me as a wierd problem but someone might have an easy answer. Either that or my laptop has had it.

A couple of days ago I noticed that if I am typing and not looking at the screen (I am no speed typist but years of beng a student means I am not too bad!), when I look up intermittently there are random letters missing from what I type. Investigating a bit more closely I have discovered that my keyboard "freezes" for a fraction of a second every 1-2 seconds and anything I type during this freeze does not register. t does not matter what application I am in (web, word, excel), and it also happens in safe mode. Even whilst typing this post, I have had to keep returning to bits to add in missing letters. When I hold down a key continuosly like this...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzetc etc, the letters pause briefly at regular 1-2 second intervals.

Very frustrating, particularly as I have a 20,000 word thesis to type up soon...any ideas?

Just for info , assume your are using win 7? Is the system under warranty?

Could you try using an external "borrowed" USB keyboard to assess whether the problem may be hardware or software related?

Also try restoring yr system prior to when you noticed the problem occurring....

Sounds like a hardware problem to me, can't be 100% sure though.

Have your keys got dirt or anything on them?

Also, have you spilt anything on the keyboard?
