teaching assistant - most boring job in the world

Options
im currently a high school teaching assistant and ive never been so bored in my whole working life (im 45). omg its so dull.

the problem is the money is quite reasonable and i cant find anything with a similar pay packet that doesnt require retraining and even then the hours are not so good.

does anyone agree? does anyone have any suggestions??

many thanks xx

sometimes other things seem better looking from where you are but when you get there, its not what you expected. I think your job sounds good.

I think Teaching Assistants can make a really positive change in a child's (and teacher's) life, so this sort of career can be really rewarding. What is it that you find dull? I appreciate that sitting in a classroom for six hours listening isn't the most interesting thing you could do, so maybe you could ask for extra jobs from the teacher to pass the time? I'm sure s/he would be really grateful for the extra help and it might help pass the time and make for good relationships with colleagues, which has to make work more rewarding?

I've had a total different experience to the OP then. I used to be a teaching assistant for a secondary school and I loved it. The money wasn't great though, but we got a lot of time off (summer, easter) and got to finish at 3pm everyday. :)

It seems to me that people are attracted by not-so-bad pay, good hours and lots of holidays.

If you're not happy, you could consider a job that pays national minumum, with statutory holiday entitlement only and one that requires working a long, full day.

If you're really keen, I'm sure you'll find a way.

You need to be more specific - what do you like / dislike about your job? What do you want from a new job? Rather than walking away from the school completely, are there any other jobs within the school that you would find more challenging?

I can think of more boring jobs!

Some people don't know they're born.

My suggestion would be to look at something you enjoy doing and see if you can make that pay.

aThey're too many people in teaching that just don't want to do the job or are not talented to do the job. It's ruining our kids education. I can speak like this because I was a teaching assistant. I've seen good ones and bad ones. The lessons can be dull and repetitive but you're not there to be inspired yourself, you're there to help inspire the kids and if you haven't got the report with the kids or the teachers then maybe you should retrain and do something different?

I did love my job but decided I was better than what I was doing. I became frustrated at working amongst bad teaching so quit. I'm now a full time mum doing a degree to do a PGCE to teach secondary myself. I've a passion for it.

'The money is not bad' kind of attitude is no reason to stay in teaching.
  • I'm a paraprofessional working with children with developmental disabilities ranging from ages 5-15... I'm so bored its unbelievable. I luv children but being a para is not the ideal job for me.. I literally want to sleep. A para is someone that works one on one with the child a teacher assistant assist the teacher working with more than one child.. A para makes sure that the child is not in danger, coaches the child, care, etc. hours r good, the pay is descent way more than minimum wage. I rather work a minimum wage job than to work as a para.. The hours that most minimum wage employs conflicts with my college studies. I like to be active, me sitting around wasting time makes me sleepy..

I'm just jealous you have a job. I'd love to have a job to moan about!
  • Boredoutofmymind26 - please read the post above yours by fuddle - if you are bored the chances are you aren't right for the job and that is much worse news for the child involved than it is for you.
