It's a minefield. We know very little about cars and it's all very confusing. Not only do you have to look at purchase price and fuel consumption but then there is the car tax stuff too.

We can afford a new one, or good second hand. We have looked at a Skoda Superb Excellence Estate 1.8 automatic and think it is comfortable and spacious. It seems to get good reviews. Should we look at anything else to compare? The estate bit is mainly for trips to the tip really.

The dealer says we will have to wait 3 months to get one - is there any alternative to that?

I've looked on the internet - I can get the same model £1000 or so cheaper through Drive the Deal - should I?

We potter around mainly, say 40-50 miles a week, with monthly trips of 120 miles return (240 altogether)

Many thanks for your help

An estate just to go to the tip seems overkill as does a 1.8 if you are only it for your level of miles.
I'm retiring at 55. You can but dream.

I agree - but we are looking for comfort too - we are past the age you plan to retire at!

a hatch back will do as well as an estate but you may have to do 2 runs to the dump!-i had an estate and never used it fully.

Why are you going for the largest saloon in the Skoda line up in a 1.8 petrol version? This is a heavy, luxury car, so you may as well get one of the diesels, which will be far more economic.
If you are not bothered about saving money on fuel, then what are you doing on a money saving site?

Why not get a petrol engine, for the few miles the OP does a diesel doesnt make sense.

If the OP has the money for a skoda superb estate I say go for it, they are a fantastic car

Not really sure what the OP wants to hear on here though, as he/she has posted the superb gets great reviews and if they like it....enough said

PS anyone is allowed on MSE even if fuel economy isnt your number one agenda

I thought MSE was about getting the best value......and I am looking for best value in a large comfortable car.

We haven't bought new before - nearest we have been is a Demonstrator. I was surprised at a 3 month lead time, and I was surprised at the extra VED - maybe we should look for something more economical (if there is such a thing with the same comfort level) I was also looking for advice from anyone who had bought a new car via the internet......

Don't get a new car just to go to the tip! Get an old Volvo estate, 700 or 800 or whatever it is, and buy something nicer and a year old so all niggles sorted for a run about.
