Banks debate my missing £1,000... it's been a MONTH! Help please!

I paid a cheque from my Santander account to my husbands RBS bank for £1,000. It bounced, was returned and represented. That should have been fine (there were funds in the account).... However, RBS called my husband to say it had bounced again! I was surprised, but watched for it being returned to my Santander account... it never has... this was over a month ago...

Santander confirm that it WASN'T returned.
RBS confirm that THEY RETURNED it...

an investigation was opened (although WHY it is taking so long, neither bank can tell me..!)

Today, my bank called me to say RBS have been in touch and say it WAS credited to my husband's account!

This is CLEARLY madness (and it can be proven simply by looking at the account??!)

My bank seem confused as to what to do next.... RBS say one thing one week and the opposite the next!

I'm confused, angry it's taking so long (while we are BOTH out of pocket to the tune of £1,000) and a little worried....

Neither bank seems to
a) be taking responsibility
or
b) know what to do next!

Has this happened to any of you? What happened?

I suspect it has been paid in to the wrong account (we had dormant business accounts), but I would have assumed that was a simple thing for a bank to check?? (We can't check as we have no access to those accounts now)

WHY is this taking so long??
WILL I get my £1,000 back??

Thank you!

...and register for online banking whilst you're at it!

    Cheques are so last year!
