Can you set Facebook to notify you whenever a specific friend posts?

I googled my question and found this http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20101020072351AAZ51Tw

but it's a couple of years old and I can't find the "Subscribe via SMS" option they mention on my phone. Maybe it no longer exists.

Anyone know if this can be done?

I can't think of a way where you will only be contacted when a specific person posts but there are ways you could go about this.
First is go to your account settings, mobile settings, and from here you can add your mobile number and choose what you would like Facebook to text you about. Its free to receive the texts however you can only choose for it to message you whenever anybody posts on your wall not just certain people. However you can have it text you whenever a specific person of your choice updates their own status (:

Also under notifications on the same page you can edit what things you are emailed about. If you add the person(s) you want to be notified about by email to your 'Close friends' group, (left hand side of main page there is a section called friends) you can check the box that says 'Posts content (Close Friends list only)' and you will be emailed whenever the people in that group post content.

After a bit of playing around I think that what you do is:

Add the specific friend to an "Interest List".
Select "Interest Lists" from the left side tab on the home page
Select "Manage List" on the right of the page.
Select "Notification Settings"
Select "Notify me about activity from Friends"

I've yet to see that this works, but it feels like it should.

OK thanks, it seems there may be a number of ways to do this. I'll try yours if mine doesn't work out.

Yep, under friends on the left you can create a list of people/persons and after adding them on the right top hand corner will have notifications. You can have on-Facebook, on-Facebook and email and off. (:

Not having any joy. I know realise that the person I want to follow the messages of is not a friend but just someone I've "liked".

Anyway with my method I don't get any notifications. You can set who you get notifications for - Friends, Friends of Friends or Everyone. I selected Everyone.

With your mobile suggestion, I've added my phone but I can't see how to have particular notifications sent to it.

With your second suggestion I think you can only add Friends to "Close Friends", not "Likes".

I have to say I'm starting to find facebook a bit unwieldy. There are too many options all over the place. Maybe they can discontinue it now they've sold it and someone can set up a new social media website for us.
