I do think though that the OP may have grounds for miss sell as the was sold the policy on the basis that it would repay this finance.
This sounds like a recent finance deal so there must be FSA compliant documents provided and probably signed by the OP. There should be an explanation of what was being bought so the OP needs to read all that they have.

OP, were you the first owner and was the car less than a year old? If so, do you have replacement vehicle cover on your car policy?

Sorry think in this case you are a little stuck. Their get out clause is that you had the policy documents and that you should have read them to understand your policy.

You could complain and they may give you at least the price of the gap back as a token of goodwill after all if they knew you had negative equity ( borrowing more than the purchase price ) they should have alerted you to it. The extras again it will depend on the policy T & C's.

It is worth a try and it may help with some of the shortfall.

Not all gap insurance is the same which money have done a review which is really helpful and explains it very well. http://www.which.co.uk/money/insurance/guides/gap-insurance/return-to-invoice-gap-insurance-review/

    Good luck
