British Gas

My previous gas bill was just over £400 and the recent bill I have just received is £325. I think this is too much, is it?

    Surely 325 is less than 400 ?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Hi, I know what you mean.
Just got our bill. Just over £170. There's only 2 of us. What the !!!!!

Last bill was almost £300. OK, it was winter, STILL, BILLS HAVE ACTUALLY DOUBLED SINCE LAST YEAR. I know they had warned about rises but this is ridiculous, to pay around £700 a year for gas??? if we had a family it would be much worse too.

Anyone else? anyone has switched to another provider, are there penalties / setup fee. Is it worth it?

    thanks

Too much for what? Too much for a one room flat, but too little for a 17 bedroomed mansion. Without knowing anything about the property, the no. of occupants, your lifestyle or how you heat and hot water it, we can't help you.
Posting £ bills does not tell us anything about your actual consumption so, if you post your annual kWh consumption and the above info, proper advice can be given.
Minute: yes, millions of people have switched, and do so every year or so. There are only exit penalties if you are still in a minimum term contract. If you've never switched (!), you won't be, but you will certainly be on Standard tariff-the most expensive. There are no 'set up' fees.
I suggest you read the articles on the main board, get your annual kWh consumption figures and hit the comp sites. Then use a cashback site for the actual switch. Yes, of course it's worth it, it's by far the easiest way to earn £200+ for 10 minutes work.

I am coming to the end of my Websaver 11 contract with British Gas and they are offering a deal for an Online Energy tariff which is 4% less than the standard tariff till January 2014. Is this a good move?

Since we don't know your kWh consumption or region, we have no idea. Is this a fixed or a variable tariff? What do the comp sites tell you?

    Thanks Macman.

Never switched, yes on standard tariff.
We're in the South East, small 2 bed cottage.
Kwh consumption last 96 days has been 3400.
Since last year we've used 11800 kwh of gas.

We've used the heating more during the cold days, other than that, we only have the hot water on set morning and evening which runs out after one bath! We have a gas cooker/oven.

Someone said it could be our boiler which was here when we moved in, (prob 20 years old).
