Natwest

Around July last year myself and my husband opend a joint account with Natwest bank as it made things easier for us. We asked that my husbands seperate account be closed as we no longer needed it. We thought that this had been done and just carried on as normal using the joint account.

However we have just this morning received a letter from Natwest stating that my husbands old account ( which we had asked to be closed ) is now being transfered to debt collectors as there is a balance owing of £ 778.49 :mad:. After checking online it turns out that his account is still open!!! and sometime in July a payment of £4 has tried to be taken out as we thought the account was closed no money was going into the account. This means that the £778.49 is all charges from this.

I cant believe this as we had asked that the account be closed when we took the joint account paperwork into the bank. Is there anything we can do. £778.49 is a stupid amount in charges.

    I'm sorry to hear that the bank did not close the account when you thought you had closed it.

    However, unless the bank agree that you did give such an instruction, or you have other evidence to prove such instruction, then I fear you may be fighting a losing battle in this direction.

    One question you could ask the bank is why were you not continuing to receive the regular statements that you would receive from an open account.

    Another question to ask is how were the advance notices of the unauthorised overdrafts provided to you. You see, according to the bank's own terms & conditions, they "will give you not less than 14 days’ notice of how much [they] are going to charge you and when"
