Trains from Barcelona are excellent. Another vote for Sitges, near enough for a day out. For a longer trip Valencia is worth the trip, about three hours by train.

Sorry cannot help with the trains as I have always driven but I would venture north of Barcelona to the Costa Brava and if relaxation/beach is the key go to the beautiful fishing villages/beaches of Estartit, L'Escala Rosas etc .... as they are close to the French border a real mix of French/Spanish.

Roses on the French border is beautiful. Its one of my favourite places. Its where El Bulli was till it (inconveniently) shut. It's gorgeous.

train at barcelona are great always on time and easy to use. Go up to callala which is a nice little place to visit

Then go the other way to salou and tarraogna for a few days. I would go down to murcia and carthagena if you want some intersting intresting sites to visit - also has great harbours lots of history

Barcelona and it's surrounding areas is beautiful, we're heading back that way this year.

Agree with the earlier post that Sitges is a lovely seaside town to visit/ stay in and very cosmopolitain. However if I did have a choice Tossa de Mar would win every time. Beautiful resort, combining old medieval town with the new town, typically Spanish without the fills aimed at the Brits. It's been our best holiday yet.

The only downfall to Tossa is that it isn't on the trainline, we did it through a package holiday so direct coach from the airport, however I believe you can get a train out to Lloret de Mar and then a bus out to Tossa or boat from Lloret and surrounding seaside resorts.

Make sure you do see the best of Barcelona too, it's the most amazing city, personally I adore all the Guadi architecture and a trip to Parc Guell is a must in Barcelona. Although we're staying out in one of the Costa's resorts this year we'll be making sure we head into Barcelona to redo all the beautiful sites it holds.
