Hi, Im sure there are many opinions on this and much will depend on whether you are driving mostly on motorways/ A Roads or B Roads etc.

Personally i do a big mixture of both and have recently purchased a 58 plate Fiesta Econetic for the upper end of your price bracket. Diesel engine (very low emissions = FREE TAX), am averaging around 65mpg. Being a ford, its pretty reliable too.

I know fiestas are small cars, i have 2 kids (10 and 16) and have no issues with the size.. a decent sized boot too.

    Skoda Octavia diesel.
Please note ; A fiesta does not have much room or a decent sized boot, whereas a Focus/Mondeo do.

I have a Fiesta and it fits 4 adults comfortably and lots (and I do mean lots) of camping stuff in the boot.

1.6 diesel engine as fitted to Fiestas, Citreons and Pugs has a rep for being a plastic engine in the trade, I think it is also in some Volvo's but can't conform that but as they all share the 2.0 I reckon it could be accurate.

I have experience of Clio and motorway speeds are less economical than sticking to say 60mph. But they are quiet and comfortable.

    Not the roomiest.

Golfs or cars based on the Golf are good bets, but they aren't as reliable as the press makes out.

A mate just got a Hyundai i20, last of the older one I think, he raves about it, got it cheap aswell, but not sure how cheap.

You are very near the price of some of these Koreans imports like Kia and Hyundai.

If you intend to keep for 5 or 6 years they should perhaps be a reason to push your budget, 7 yrs warranty on both I think, but check on that as it was a while since I have been anywhere near a dealer. I did look at the new Kia Rio last year but got a Volvo V50 instead.

You could get a very nice Focus for that kind of budget though, especially if you went for one with slightly higer miles, cambelt on the 2.0 is not due till after 100k, six speed gearbox is a good 'un, though expect nearer to 45mpg than 55mpg.

My missus has had no problems with her Clio Dci, though perhaps my 7/8k oil changes with Mobil One Diesel oil have something to do with that. The neighbour has the same engine in his 11reg Qashqui, and yes I may have spelt that wrongly, he has had no issues either.

The 1.9dci now that is an other story all together, hand grenade with the pin out that one.

I have the 1.5 diesel Qashqai. I've had no problems with it and I love it, but wouldn't recommend it if your main criteria is to have the best possible fuel economy. The economy is good for the size of car, but doesn't compete with the super-economical Focus/Fiesta etc. Plus I'd be surprised if you could get one on your budget.

I remember reading an article, I think it was Top Gear or something, that tested the most economical cars. It was a comparison of a few of the "green" models and I think the Focus beat all the other cars, even small hatchbacks. I'll see if I can find the link...

Edit: here is the link. Auto Express, not Top Gear! Hope it helps give you some pointers.
