Cheque payable to 'cash'?

Hi
My partner has asked me to withdraw some money out of his (Lloyds) account as he can't get to the bank today.
He's written a cheque payable to 'cash' and he thinks if I take it into his bank they will give me the money....

They won't will they?

Thanks

You need to deposit it into your account so that it can clear first.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Not unless the account is held in both your names, jointly. One can withdraw cash with a cheque payable to 'cash' no problem, but cash will only be handed over to the person named on the account.

    No they won't.
They can cash only to the account holder or his/her known agent.

I thought they could only write cheques out to cash if the cheque is uncrossed. As nearly all cheques are crossed that would mean they have to be paid into a bank account.

    May be wrong though.

If the drawer writes "please pay cash" and signs again across the middle of the cheque, the bank may treat it as they would an un-crossed cheque (when they still existed).

This is what my company has to do to withdraw petty cash, but in that case the bank knows the person presenting it by sight. I don't know whether they would allow it for anyone else. More likely for small amounts with good ID, perhaps.

It's different for businesses with petty cash as the banks will normally hold open credit agreements.

They may possibly do it for you as a one off with a letter from him, but I've only seen it done in exceptional circumstances such as when the account holder is in hospital.

Could he not transfer the money online to you and then you can withdraw it?
