HI all, I need to change the oil for my Yamaha Vity scotter but I don't know what oil to use. I have checked the instructions and it gives me a range

SAE 10w-30, 10W-40, 10W-50, 15W-40, 20w-40 or 20w-50 and then it plots them on a sort of graph with what looks like Degrees C. Its a bit confusing can anyone help please?

HI all, I need to change the oil for my Yamaha Vity scotter but I don't know what oil to use. I have checked the instructions and it gives me a range

The instructions most likely are written to cover any climate on earth. For UK go for 10W-something ... 10W-40 would be a good bet or, if it doesn't burn any oil between changes then try 10W-30 which ought to be a bit cheaper. In a tropical climate you'd need 20W-50. I use 10W-30 in my Honda 4-stroke mower and strimmer.

Select the grade that falls in the 0-20 deg bracket, probably 10w40. The book should give you the spec (ACEA or API) that is required, it is important that you use the correct one or higher. Make sure it is a motorcycle oil you get as these are designed for the harsh conditions the oil is subjected to.

Probably something like Shell Advance 4T AX7, which is a 10w 40 semi synthetic, or Shell Advance 4T Ultra Scooter that's a 5w 40 fully synthetic.

Thank you evereyone. I've double checked looks like 10w 40 & 50 and 15w 40 fall across the 0-20 degree scale so there we go. Thank you all very uch for your help.

I had a Yamaha Jog back when I was 16 and it took 2 stroke oil. Was always topping it up with Wilkinsons finest. Those were the days. :o

Don't just go by 5w30 or 10w40 unless you have checked the JASO rating, the JASO rating is more normally used for bikes.

Your handbook will give you an idea, my Yamaha XMax 250 uses a JASO MA as a minimum with the guide for our climate being a 10w40 grade.

You could use the Yamalube oil which are a choice of Fully Synthetic 4-FS, semi synthetic 4-S or mineral 4-M.

Note that on most scooters there is no filter and the oil must be changed every 1800 miles because of this.

I bought some better oil for mine. Castrol Power 1 4T, cost £9.99 at Halfords, needed 2 litres as mine takes over a litre, used the leftover to change the final drive oil aswell. Scooter seems smoother and does a little more to the gallon, but it was running on the semi that the dealer put in at 600miles so I suspect and Full Synthetic woud have helped.

But it was red in colour, worth it just for that. Due to the price I shall be looking to buy a larger bottle the next time, as I intend to change the oil sooner than the 1800 miles interval, it takes five minutes so I am happy to do it every thousand.

Castrol is rated at JASO MA2 which is the newer of the JASO specs from what I have read.

Don't use any cheap car oil, it will not end well, due to the lack of a filter(usually just a guaze oil screen that is cleaned at the first 600mile service) you really need to be on top of the specs.

There are some good bits of info on opieoils, and a bigger selection of oils than Halfords.

Or if your dealer gives you a good price why not use Yamalube, though I would only use Fully Synth, worth the extra £1 or soif you ask me.
