Hi all.

I am about to buy an old Dell notebook on Ebay, just for the PSU so that I can try out an identical Notebook that I recently acquired that currently has no charger/Psu. (Approx £10.00 - cheapest way of obtaining a charger)

Its an old Latitude LS Model PS01S

The new one has a problem ie No one knows the password to get system started.

Is it possible to get round this easily (They dont have a CD drive - just USB)

MIGHT not need it if mine works OK but it could be nice to get it working.

It seems that the battery has been removed as it is suspected that it was used as a terminal. ??

THERE IS ALSO A DOCKING STATION SLOT ON THE UNDERNEATH.

I BELIEVE THIS LAPTOP IS A CALL CENTER VERSION BECAUSE IT HAS NO INTERNAL BATTERY + THE DOCKING ATTATCHMENT.

CHECK THE SPECS AT DELL.COM THE SERVICE TAG IS
5BRDC0J.

    windows password or cmos password?

if it's bios, call dell for an override, or try removing the bios battery (under keyboard)

if it's the windows password, which version of windows is it, and does it have a domain drop down box?

Hi Closed and thanks for the reply.

Battery removal? Is that easy on an LS?

    Will that def remove password?

What will need resetting after replacing battery?

are you talking about bios password or windows?

bios - easy once you get it open. If it's the very square model ls400?, you have to push the bezel where the power button is to the left to remove it, then unscrew the keyboard - haven't seen one for a while, but I think the battery is under the keyboard.

can't guarantee it will fix it, but no harm in trying if you don't want to try and persuade Dell you are the legitimate owner

if it's the windows password, you will need a password remover or cracker (unless it's Windows98, in which case press escape)

You can easily reset the password

As you can only boot from usb you will need something called Yumi to be able to boot needed software off usb key
    http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/ ne

The needed software to load on to the above Yumi usb boot system is called Offline NT password & registry editor
    http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/
With that it is easy to reset the admin password

    Hi Closed.

Dunno is the answer as I haven't bought it yet. Seller reckons it works OK so I expect it boots into Bios but not windows (Just guessing, here.) Running XP I believe.

Ok. a couple of things to try there. Esp the USB key.
    Cheers for the replies.

Yep The LS is definitely square, Closed.

Will let you know how I get on.

    pull white connector out carefully

Also possible disk could be encrypted.

You may have problems getting it to boot from usb if it's a windows password, and you have no cd or floppy drive.

Glad you showed me that. I would've been looking for a 2032 or similar. :)
