What funding is available to take BSc Social Work(did a different degree 15yrs ago)

It doesn't. The previous degree is what stops you from being eligible for the fee loan. You're then ineligible for the maintenance grant as to be eligible for that you need to be eligible for a fee loan.
The only entitlement through SFE will be the full maintenance loan, and possibly parents learning allowance, childcare grants and adult dependent grant.0 -
Thanks for your time, appreciate it. Going to bed gutted now!0

Have you considered one of the NHS degrees? I know its not exactly what you wanted but some can lead to work in the community that's not a million miles from social work, often helping the same vulnerable people just in a slightly different way!
Occupational therapy or mental health nursing perhaps?0 -
There are a couple of universities that offer joint degrees in nursing and social work which, I'm pretty sure, are NHS funded; I think they're at Sheffield Hallam, Edge Hill and Salford. If they're within reach and you're interested in this combination, they might be worth checking out.

The one is Salford definitely has the fees paid, its specific to learning disabilities though:

Social work if you've studied before would only give you the NHS bursary & student loan... from which you'd have to pay tuition fees. Doing the joint degree may be more beneficial as you would have two options work wise upon finishing... and you may end up liking one more than the other!July £10 a day Challenge= £0 / £3100

Have you considered doing a MA in Social Work? My friend is part of the way through this, and while it is a big change from her original degree (Marketing) she has been able to keep up with the learning.
Hers is at Salford Uni, http://www.salford.ac.uk/courses/social-work-studies?mode=ov
The big advantage is that it is shorter than going back and doing a full time degree and you are still eligible for NHS funding.0 -
Hi,
I am a single parent and quit my well paid job to embark upon my dream of nursing at university 2 years ago.
I do not know much about the SW degree, but what I do know is that some councils do pay trainees in SW in my local council they advertise once per year for trainee social works paid £15k per year during training around May/June time, maybe worth a try.
To do the Masters I am aware that you have to have recent higher education in past 3 yrs or to be able to apply your experience to prove you can do this so may be worth a shot if applicable as this is a 2 year masters.
The other option is... I know this may sound harsh but the nursing degree is really full on and I do know that the other NHS ones are not such as OT, physio etc... maybe you can continue to work part time? I work bank shifts when I can in the hospital and working sundays you can earn £11 per hour.
What I am trying to say is dont put your dreams away due to finances.... my kids and myself go without so many things but we all know in another year things will return to normal and as much as it is hard a SW can earn £25 to £30k per year easily....... can you do this now? but if you can in 2 to 3 years how much will this change your childs life????
I believe in follow your heart and deal with the consequences as they arise! My children come first and although they may be missing out on little things they will have a better life once I graduate.
Good luck on whatever you decide to do.Mort July 2008 £65000..Mortgage July 2010 £63848
Mortgage June 2012 £54500:T chip chipping away.0 -
Hi,
I am doing my second degree in SW at the mo...
Are you looking at Hudd - as i don't know of many that offer it as an BSC?
You will get no fee help - there are those at SF that will tell you different - they will send you letters that tell you differently interspaced with those that say they won't - they are however not going to give you fee loans. So seriously don't get you're hopes up on that front I received 3 letters in one day 2 saying they would 1 saying they wouldn't be the one with the latest date said No (cough)...
You will get childcare components, and more cash than I as someone with no kids. You'll be entitled to the bursary - about £4.5 k (ish)...
There are priavate grants that you may be eligible for - there's a link some where on here - but again i wouldn't get your hopes up - I know lots who applied and no one who admitted getting any help.
It's been a real struggle - and my fees are less than yours would be however having said that it's what i've always wanted to do so i'm loving it.

for some reason i cannot quote - but in response to Saleb -
there are 2 guys on work release on my course. I live in Y&H. They both had to fight ot get on the course siting that they were doing the 'lesser' work of SW's any way... (it has also been highlighted there are some dubious practices going on in one of the offices when it comes to interpretation of policy) they had both been at their departments for 3, and 15 years respectively. both I and my sister had looked into it, it seems to be a really difficult route to find. (But hell yeah if ya find it OP).
