Crucial scan...not running?

Evening all
Mr B has got hold of a second-hand laptop, HP NC8000 and he wants to up the RAM. He has tried running a Crucial scan to find out what he needs but the scan won't run. He has previously run the software on this machine but today it is just not happening. Any ideas why? He has uninstalled and reinstalled Crucial, he's also tried Orca, but no joy.
He has Avast and AVG anti-virus programmes running, he tried with one and/or both disabled. He also disabled the Windows firewall but nothing has worked.
Are there any other scans he could try? Thanks.

uninstall avg and follow the speedup sticky and you might not need the ram
There's a drop down menu on the crucial website to select model if the scanner doesn't work

As standard this laptop had 512-MB 333-MHz DDR SDRAM, upgradeable to 2048 MB

HP should use a simpler naming convention - it took me several minutes to find the relevant options.0
