thanks for all the suggestions keep em' coming lol. Some great suggestions. The gas and elec are both provided by british gas, so am i right in thinking i have to stick with them for 28 days then I can change?
Ive but a box together with all essentials.
Do i have to register on the electoral role at this new address?
Were in the fortunate situation of moving out of parents houses so change of address on everything isn't so important if we forget something.Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0 -
Yes, do the electoral roll once you've moved - no need to do it on day 1 though!0

just one last question...is phone line and broadband the same, do i have to stay with the current provider (sly)?Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0

Register with local GP and dentist... you never know when an emergency will arise.0

Ist day all you need is insurance and utilities. Take meter readings and ring your insurance companies (eg contents/car). Tell the DVLA ASAP, I knew someone who forgot, several years, marriage and house moves later they mislaid their driving licence. DVLA would only send a (paid for) replacement to the address they had (good job the new owners were helpful!)
Oh and pack kitchen, bathroom stuff and bedding separately. Get those boxes out and unpacked 1st and make sure the beds are up and made ASAP. Nothing worse than being knackered at the end of the day and having to make beds.Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)0 -
Be prepared for the shock that it doesn't look as nice as you remember it!
I was gutted when I moved in and saw furniture marks and holes where pictures had been. It's all perfectly normal of course but I was really down about it for the first few hours! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Im dreading finding all the bad bits...Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0 -
We find it useful to put things like the kettle and bedding in the car and move them ourselves. We then know exactly where they are at the other end and don't have to unpack several boxes wondering if we've got the right one! We also moved a few very valuable bits ourselves rather than trust them to the removal van, but that's probably a bit paranoid.0

Be patient! Our solicitors phoned us at 1pm to say we had completed. Fortunately our moving truck wasn't booked until 2 weeks later (we had an overlap with our rental property) as the seller didn't actually drop the keys off at the EA until 4:30pm! They had decided to rent a van and move themselves and had totally underestimated how many trips it would take them to empty the house.
Although you might be thinking you want to change utilities supplier right away, you'll be so busy for the first week or two that shopping around is the last thing you'll need. Phone the current supplier, tell them you've moved in and give them the readings. It's a really quick process and they'll get you set up with an account. Get unpacked and have a breather before you sort out switching - it'll make very little difference for just a few weeks, especially if the weather stays nice and you don't use the heating.0 -
Yes, patience is the most important thing! In my experience you never get the keys until all the solicitors come back from their lunch at 2pm and confirm the money's where it should be. You might well find it's the longest morning of your life!0
