my sol got back to me by e mail 9am this morning telling me it was a glitch on the inland revenue scanners and they read it as 2006 not 2007 hence the penalty and fine, she believes her hand writting was to blame, she has sent off the necessary form to correct this...so relieved
thanks to all who tried to reasure me

Thank goodness you've now been put out of your misery. You'll have to try to have a fabulous weekend next week to make up for the worriesome one you've just experienced.

Thanks for posting back so quickly to let us know the result too. It's annoying when people leave you wondering what happened after posting about something. :o
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Jewel - having recently experienced a similar thing, I would recommend you chase this up in a week or two by speaking to the IR yourself. I was hit by a SD demand just before Christmas, which I knew I did not owe; my sol said she'd dealt with it and was just awaiting the certificate, so imagine my surprise when I got yet another demand in early February with interest added and the threat of debt recovery action!

I contacted my solicitor AGAIN and was AGAIN told that it had already been resolved, which I didn't believe, so I phoned the IR myself. Spoke to somebody who said he could see where the mistake was on the form, and instructed me to fax through a correction. I did this, but had a gut feeling that things were still not right - so a week or so later, I phoned up again. I finally got to speak to somebody who sounded competent - it would seem that my fax had been lost AND my sol's original attempt at completing the form was full of errors. Finally, this lady sorted it out for me there and then, and a few days later I received written confirmation that nothing was owing.

As an aside, I think Stamp Duty is the most unfair tax. Not only is it extortionate, but it isn't progressive either - someone buying a house for 499,999 would pay £5K stamp duty; someone buying a house for 501,000 would pay £20K stamp duty!

Errr £499,999 would be liable at 3% not 1%.... so more like 15k

As Richard W says, typical of HMRC, we're always getting letters but at least its a lot easier to get through to them now. We sent one lot of Stamp Duty off and for some reason best known to HMRC they decided to set it against our firm's National Insurance contributions (we pay electronically). They told us we had overpaid on our NI contributions and our Cashiers Department couldn't understand it as we hadn't paid any on the date HMRC said so after investigation HMRC finally owned up to what they had done, this is despite the Stamp Duty reference number being quite clearly displayed. Ours is not to reason why the Government works in mysterious ways.
