A 19 year old in full-time education is now still a qualifying young person. It changed for all benefits, but CSA specifically, I'd have to check.

    Thanks for all your replies

Daughter's birthday is 3 June, when she will be 19. she leaves college at this time after completing her end of term assessment exams.

She did GCSEs, 1 year of A level study, then 2 years of HND Art college.
We have tried to get confirmation from CSA of final payment date, but they say that we have to wait until PWC informs them she is no longer in receipt of CB!!

Obviously better for us if we cease payments as per assessment in June, but would like clarification from somewhere first, dont want to get into situation of an arrears bill!
  • You would need to check with the CSA if a HND is classed as advanced education ( sorry I don't know) as a

"Child - for child support purposes someone is a child if they are:

    under 16; or
between 16 and 19 and in full time, non-advanced education. This is doing a course that is not higher than A level standard"

If it is non-advanced education the closure date would be be her 19th birthday, however you will need to contact the CSA nearer/at the time to advise them.

If it is advanced education then your case possibly should have been closed some time ago.

The CSA do not have to wait for the PWC to notify them that Child Benefit is no longer in payment they can contact the PWC and they can also check with child benefit themselves.

    Hope this helps

Crikey - you got me thinking then!!!

just checked paper work, and my mistake, its a BTEC Diploma of Fine Arts that shes studying now. We asked Q of CSA when she started course, and they said that its classed as non-advanced education, and therefore she is still classed as a qualifying child for child support.

Deffo be 19th birthday for the closure date then, as you have clarified the non~advanced/advanced education issue.

For child support purposes a child ceases to be a qualifying child at 19 if any of the other criteria do not apply to use an earlier date ( ie got a job, on Income Support, in advanced education)
