I just went to the Energy Cashback site to get a quote for dual fuel, and after giving all the requested details, the best quote was npower online. However, when I clicked at the top of the page where it states the tariff I am now paying with TP+, the figures were all wrong. The gas rates had a standing charge shown and TP+ do not have a SC on the low use rate and the electricity charges were incorrect as per the latest rises on 1st Feb. Whilst I am not leaping to the defence of TP+, it is very unfair to compare rates if they are quoted incorrectly.

Similarly, I also visited the npower website, input my usage details and was again given a different set of figures which are favourable to those on the cashback site. It is impossible to compare like with like on these sites because they all use different scenarios. For instance, on the Cashback site for Electricity they say 14.259p for the first 182Kwh per quarter and 6.920 thereafter" whlst on the npower website it says" The first 728 units per year at 13.93 per unit an d 6.99p thereafter". It is very confusing.

I think the only sure way is to do your own sums after gathering information on a few of the acknowledged best value deals/companies. I've looked at a few comparison sites, and, as you say, quoting a different company or payment plan as what one is on "now," often changes the results.

You know what your usage is and should therefore be able to make your own more accurate comparison once you know what the standing charges (if any), unit costs and perks are. Sort of makes a mockery of having the sites, but at least they may point you in the right direction. To me, it's a bit like using the Mormon site for genealogy research, they are a good indicator but sometimes bear no resemblance to the actual parish records.
