what to look for in a digital camera?

    Why not look at a camera phone. The best at the moment is the Sony Ericcson K800i (or is it the 810?) with the 3 megapixel camera. I have the K750i with a 2MP cam and the pictures are excellent - I had gotten some printed out in a proper photo lab, and the assistant couldn't believe that they came from a camera phone!

    Failing that, go for a 5MP standard compact camera with at least a 3:1 optical zoom (you can digital zoom on your PC later). Prices should be around £60-£80, look for any special / discounted deals in Argos, Curry's etc. as they are now trying to push 6 and 7 MP cameras which you really don't need.
